If you've ever wondered what your dog is thinking, Stein's third novel offers an answer. Enzo is a lab terrier mix plucked from a farm outside Seattle to ride shotgun with race car driver Denny Swift as he pursues success on the track and off. Denny meets and marries Eve, has a daughter, ZoĆ«, and risks his savings and his life to make it on the professional racing circuit. Enzo, frustrated by his inability to speak and his lack of opposable thumbs, watches Denny's old racing videos, coins koanlike aphorisms that apply to both driving and life, and hopes for the day when his life as a dog will be over and he can be reborn a man. When Denny hits an extended rough patch, Enzo remains his most steadfast if silent supporter. Enzo is a reliable companion and a likable enough narrator, though the string of Denny's bad luck stories strains believability. Much like Denny, however, Stein is able to salvage some dignity from the over-the-top drama. (May) Copyright © Reed Business Information, a division of Reed Elsevier Inc. MY REVIEW: I really liked this book. Although I did skim a bit over the "in detail" racing parts. If you love animals you will like this book. I don't really recommend it for anyone that has recently lost someone to cancer though. It might be a little too close to home for that.
OVERALL BOOKCLUB REVIEW: As soon as we started talking about this book everyone was talking about their "connection" with certain dogs (and some cats). Everyone really liked the book.
I'm going to give it:
4.5 books!
Soooo I didn't get this book, I borrowed it from the library, so I don't have one to give away. Boooo hissss. Sorry!!
Next month's book is:
Just the title sounds interesting don't you think?? I'm #3 on the library list so I might have to buy it to get it read by next month. If I do then I'll offer it up here!
That looks good! I don't often read books narrated by dogs, I think it sounds like a great perspective!
